Diabetes affects millions around the world. Diabetes mellitus (Diabetes) is a medical condition where the body has an impaired ability to process blood glucose or blood sugar. There are 3 types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes, as it is typically diagnosed during childhood. It is an autoimmune disease, in which the body’s immune system attacks the beta-cells of the pancreas – which is where insulin is produced – resulting in reduced insulin production. Individuals diagnosed with type1 diabetes are dependent on daily artificial insulin injections.
Type 2 diabetes typically develops in late adulthood and is secondary to a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors, which results in changes of the metabolic system. Lifestyle factors increasing the risk for Type 2 diabetes includes:
- Obesity (specifically central abdominal obesity)
- Low physical activity
- An energy dense diet
A combination of these factors, result in impaired insulin sensitivity. Which means that the body doesn’t respond to the presence of insulin, resulting in impaired blood glucose metabolism.
Treatment for Type 2 diabetes is solely dependent on the individual’s ability to control blood glucose levels with diet, physical activity and medication. Some individuals may require artificial insulin to assist with blood glucose control.
Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. Due to a combination of genetic, hormonal and lifestyle factors, the expectant mother becomes less sensitive to insulin resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. Elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy is dangerous for both mother and infant. Gestational diabetes can be controlled with a strict diet, medication and usually resolves upon the birth of the baby. However, women who have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes are at a higher risk for the development of Type 2 diabetes.
